WhatsApp is rolling out new account security features designed to strengthen login protection and help users avoid scams. The updates include support for multiple passkeys, stronger two-step verification passwords, and additional information about unknown callers.
Users who have both Android and iOS devices can now create multiple passkeys for the same WhatsApp account. Passkeys allow users to authenticate using biometrics or their device screen lock, reducing reliance on traditional login credentials. WhatsApp says more than one billion people have already created a passkey.
Two-step verification is also getting a major upgrade. Instead of relying solely on a six-digit PIN, users can create longer alphanumeric passwords that include special characters, making credentials more difficult to guess or compromise.
WhatsApp is also improving protection against suspicious calls. Android users may see additional information about callers who are not saved in their contacts, including whether the number originates from another country and whether they share any WhatsApp groups.
The updates build on Meta’s broader push to combat account hijacking and scams. WhatsApp has introduced several protections in 2026, including Strict Account Settings, warnings for potentially fraudulent device-linking requests, and an optional Scam Alert feature that uses on-device machine learning to identify potentially suspicious messages.
With more than three billion users across over 180 countries, WhatsApp’s latest security improvements aim to make account takeovers and social engineering attacks more difficult while giving users more information before interacting with unknown contacts.
