The New York Blood Center Enterprises (NYBCe) has been hit by a ransomware attack, significantly impacting its operations across multiple states. The cyberattack, which occurred on Sunday, January 26, has left the non-profit organization working urgently to restore critical services and fulfill orders.
In a cybersecurity incident update posted on its website, NYBCe confirmed that it detected suspicious activity in its IT systems and immediately engaged third-party cybersecurity experts. Investigations revealed that the disruption was due to a ransomware incident, forcing the organization to take its systems offline to contain the attack.
Impact on Life-Saving Services
As one of the largest independent, community-based blood centers in the U.S., NYBCe plays a vital role in supplying lifesaving blood, stem cell products, specialty pharmaceuticals, and essential clinical and consulting services. With 10 operating divisions, the non-profit supports over 600 hospitals and healthcare facilities across 45 countries, serving more than 75 million patients—particularly in the Tri-State area.
NYBCe acknowledged the disruptions to operations but assured the public that it is working closely with hospital partners to implement workarounds and continue fulfilling urgent orders. However, the organization has not yet provided a definitive timeline for full system restoration.
Blood Donation Emergency Amid Cyberattack
The timing of this ransomware attack couldn’t be worse. Just last week, NYBCe and New Jersey Blood Services issued a joint statement declaring a blood emergency due to a decline in donations caused by freezing temperatures. They urged local residents to donate blood to prevent shortages.
Despite the cyberattack, NYBCe assured donors that blood donation centers remain operational. However, longer processing times are expected, and some blood drives may be rescheduled. Donors will be notified of any changes to previously scheduled appointments.
NYBCe’s Commitment to Community Health
NYBCe reaffirmed its dedication to public health and safety, emphasizing that the well-being of patients and communities remains a top priority. The organization continues to navigate this cybersecurity crisis while maintaining lifesaving services.
