WHAT IS “GHOST TAPPING”? HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM CONTACTLESS PAYMENT FRAUD

As contactless payments become more common, a new type of digital theft—known as “ghost tapping”—is on the rise. This form of fraud targets people who use tap-to-pay credit or debit cards, or mobile wallets, by secretly reading their data without their consent.

What Is Ghost Tapping?

Ghost tapping occurs when a scammer uses a wireless device, such as a Flipper Zero, to capture the NFC (Near Field Communication) or RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) signals emitted by contactless cards and devices. These are the same signals that allow you to make quick tap payments at checkout.

How It Works

1. Detecting NFC/RFID Signals: The Flipper Zero can identify nearby wireless frequencies used by payment cards.
2. Close Proximity: Scammers typically need to be within a few millimeters to a few feet of the victim—often in crowded places like trains, concerts, or shopping malls.
3. Capturing Data: While the Flipper Zero can’t crack encrypted security codes, it can read and store other information from your card.
4. Fraudulent Activity: Stolen data may be used for unauthorized transactions or online purchases, sometimes starting with small “test” charges to go unnoticed.

How to Protect Yourself

• Use RFID-blocking wallets or sleeves to prevent devices from wirelessly reading your cards.
• Stay alert in crowded spaces and be cautious of people who get unusually close.
• Monitor your statements regularly for unfamiliar or small transactions.
• Avoid untrusted vendors or anyone rushing you to make a quick tap payment.
• Lock your card through your banking app when not in use to block unauthorized access.
