GOOGLE BUYS SPIRIT AND AMERICAN AIRLINES DATA FOR $10 MILLION TO TRAIN AI

Google has acquired a massive collection of corporate data from bankrupt Spirit Airlines for $10 million, with plans to use the information to improve its products and AI models.

Spirit Airlines, founded in 1964, operated as a major U.S. low-cost carrier before ending operations on May 2, 2026. During its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, the airline put its deidentified corporate data up for auction. Google submitted the winning $10 million bid, topping a $7.5 million offer from Mercor.io Corporation.

According to a court filing, the purchase includes approximately 100 million emails and 500 million Microsoft Teams messages, along with data from employee email accounts, OneDrive, SharePoint and internal documents. The collection also contains marketing materials, HR information, project management files, financial databases, audits and presentations, giving Google access to a significant archive of internal business communications and operational records from the former airline.

Google says the acquired information will be used to enhance its products and AI models. The deal does not include Spirit Airlines passenger profiles or frequent-flyer information.
