MCDONALD’S AI DRIVE-THRU HANDLES ORDERS WITHOUT HUMAN EMPLOYEES

McDonald’s is exploring the future of fast-food ordering by testing a new artificial intelligence-powered drive-thru system at five locations across the United States. The technology, known as ArchIQ, was introduced during the company’s 2026 global convention and is designed to automate the drive-thru ordering experience.

For years, customers have interacted with restaurant employees when placing drive-thru orders. With ArchIQ, that process could soon be handled entirely by AI. Built using Google’s technology, the system can greet customers, take orders, process modifications, and display finalized purchases on-screen before directing drivers to the pickup window.

The AI assistant, reportedly nicknamed “Archy,” supports both English and Spanish and can even recognize returning customers who request their usual order. According to a McDonald’s franchise owner who demonstrated the system online, roughly 90% of orders have been completed successfully without requiring assistance from restaurant staff.

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski recently acknowledged that automation is becoming a larger part of the customer experience. As technology takes over more routine interactions, the company says it must work harder to ensure customers still feel valued and receive consistent service.

Industry experts believe the pilot program could signal a broader shift across the fast-food sector. If successful, AI-powered ordering systems may become increasingly common as restaurants look to improve efficiency, reduce labor costs, and streamline operations. The move also raises questions about the future role of human workers as artificial intelligence continues to expand throughout the service industry.

Whether ArchIQ becomes a permanent feature remains to be seen, but McDonald’s latest test highlights how AI is rapidly transforming everyday experiences—including ordering a burger and fries.
